Arrowhead Community,

We had a special event last Thursday. Eagleson Williams, an 8th generation Ditidaht carver, and the artist who carved our new totem pole, came to school.

Four years ago, Eagleson worked with our 4th graders to design a new totem pole. As part of our agreement, we would return the totem pole his grandfather, Sam Williams, carved and that was purchased from Ye Olde Curiosity Shop in 1966. For 60 years this totem pole has welcomed people to Arrowhead’s campus. As soon as we get it raised, the new totem pole will welcome people far into the future.

Eagleson knew there would be a ceremony as we received the new totem pole and returned his grandfather’s, but he was quite overwhelmed at our Hawks surrounding him with song and love and honor. He was going to tell us the story of our new pole and his work with our 4th graders many years ago, but he froze up. Sitting on our stage, he said, “I’m just taking it all in,” and “To be honest I’m a little nervous.”

Some staff told me later that they felt bad for him, but our kids didn’t. Our kids felt WITH him. They know exactly how nervous feels, and to them, he was kind of famous and they were sharing space with him. I sat next to him on the stage to lead a Q&A and help him out, but I didn’t need to because Hawk hands shot in the air with questions and we were off and running. Well, I was running, from child to child as they fired questions at him.

Your children asked SUCH good questions. Did he carve day and night to finish our pole? (Yes) How long did it take him? (2.5 months) What does he carve with? (pocketknife) How old was he when he learned to carve? (4) And on and on.

Three students on stage with Eagleson Williams.

Three younger siblings of the original 4th graders read a beautiful statement thanking him and his family for his grandfather’s totem pole and formally returning the pole to his family.

Arrowhead students standing in the gym and singing "One Nation" with Eagleson Williams.

Then we sang One Nation and he stood in the middle, filming in a circle, taking it all in. Kids swarmed him for autographs when it was over.

Eagleson Williams and his friend carry the totem pole he carved for Arrowhead.

Later, as I was driving him and the totem pole down to the waterfront so he could store it at Ye Olde Curiosity Shop while he restored it, he said life was pretty hard right now but he would hold this day in his heart forever, and he couldn’t wait to share pictures and the video with his community to show them the ceremony and how he was honored and welcomed.

I was so proud of our children, and you should be proud of them, too. We often say, “You’ve got to show up,” when we talk about being authentic, or valuing community, or putting in the work of a relationship. Your children showed up for this man. They pulled him into our family and honored him in a way that left him speechless.

You might see Eagleson (“Don’t call me Mr. Williams. That’s my dad.”) down at the waterfront. I often see him there or at Pike Place. Say hi! He is a forever Hawk now, thanks to your beautiful children and their giant hearts.

Camp Cedar Springs, 5th grade
Camp Cedar Springs for 5th graders will be coming up immediately after our spring break next month. If your student is attending camp and will require any medication and/or over the counter product while at camp, you must have a medication authorization form completed by your physician. Camp packets are coming soon! Please read the medication info and policy carefully so you have plenty of time to get the forms completed that are needed. Students are not allowed to self-carry any products in their backpack or luggage, and we cannot accept any medication or over the counter product without this form.
If you have any questions after reading through the camp packet, please call the nurse.

Illness reminder:
To reduce the spread of illness at school, if your student is feeling ill, or they require medicine in the morning to feel better, please keep them at home. We continue to see a steady state of flu, colds, and other illness in our wider community. Frequent hand washing is always encouraged to prevent illness as well.
·      Students may not return to school after illness until they have been symptom free for at least 24 hours (no fever, vomiting, diarrhea etc. in the last 24 hours – without the use of medications - and general symptoms have improved). See the district link for more detailed information on when to keep a student home.
·      Please do not send your student to school with medicine in their pocket or backpack, this includes over the counter products; these can never be given at school without the required documentation in place.

School Nurse Substitutes are Needed
Are you a Registered Nurse who might be interested in exploring the rewards of school based nursing, supplementing work hours or simply maintaining nursing licensure credentials? We would love to discuss available opportunities as a substitute school nurse with the Northshore School District -- this is a great way to transition into community nursing with K-12 school age children.
